June 2022 "Barns of Old Glory" Family Event

In June, Childhood Cancer Community was excited to host a family event at the Barns of Old Glory. The Barns of Old Glory are located on 300 acres of rolling farmland and pastures, nestled in the beautiful bluffs overlooking the Whitewater State Park, just 20 miles east of Rochester, MN.

This event was hosted to provide a peaceful, relaxing, and restful afternoon for our Childhood Cancer Community families to come together and enjoy the surroundings. During the afternoon, there were yard games to participate in, wagon rides to experience the beauty of the property, quiet arts and crafts to enjoy as a family, farm animals to interact with, the gentle murmur of the fountains, and tree frogs singing in the distance. The afternoon and evening were designed to provide a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the medical world that our families face each and everyday in the battle against their child’s cancer diagnosis.

Also during the afternoon, MegaWatt Entertainment was onsite for our teens & adults to enjoy. MegaWatt Entertainment provided a video game trailer complete with a game theater, lights and limo style seating, was climate controlled for comfort, featured laser lights, and a Game Coach onsite to help our guests enjoy the games.

Then to round-out the afternoon, as well as the highlight of the day, our families were invited into the beautifully appointed “Grand Barn” for a scrumptious dinner catered and served by the Happy Ramblers 4H Club of Plainview, MN. The “Grand Barn” serves as the backdrop for weddings throughout the year, so you can imagine the atmosphere it provided for our evening together. Childhood Cancer Community had the pleasure of decorating the dining tables in gold and navy with beautiful wildflowers serving as the centerpieces.

Thank you to Mark and Betty Thoreson (owners of the Barns of Old Glory), and to Bryan Wattier (CFO of MegaWatt Entertainment) for providing discounts helping to make this event possible. Also, thank you to the Happy Ramblers 4H Club for serving dinner and to Brendan Bush (our professional photographer) for capturing these magical memories.

And finally, thank you to all of Childhood Cancer Community’s supporters and donors for believing in our mission and for making these “connections between our families” possible. The time they spend together, supporting one another, provides the needed healing on this long and lonely journey.
